Machining Magnesium

Magnesium is the lightest commercial metal and boasts a silvery white color. It is ductile, chemically active, only two thirds the density of aluminum, and can be treated to reasonably high strength. Magnesium alloys are available in wrought and cast forms. High strength to weight ratio and fuel saving capability made it widely popular in automobile industry. Magnesium has good mechanical properties at high temperatures and excellent corrosion resistance. It has low specific volumetric specific heat (quick cooling of die casting) and inert to atmospheric air due to thin oxide films. Magnesium has the capability to absorb vibrations and is known for its excellent thermal conductivity.
